The Pioneer Fire Company No.1 is an all volunteer organization providing fire service to Jenkintown Borough, Montgomery County in conjunction with the Independent Fire Company forming the Jenkintown Fire Department. Company membership is comprised of active firefighters, fire ground support personnel, junior firefighters, contributing members, adminstrative members, and our life members, 100% of which are volunteers.
Currently our roster includes approximately 65 individuals, with an active firefighting crew of about 20 firefighters.
In addition to firefighting, the Pioneer Fire Company also has a roster of certified fire police personnel which primarily are responsible for traffic control at emergency incidents as well as scheduled community events.
The Pioneer Fire Company No.1 has been providing service and protection to the community since 1884, currently serving two engines from our station at 700 Greenwood Ave., across from the Town Square.
Jenkintown Borough has an area of 0.58 square miles with a population of 4,719, making the borough one of the top-25 highest population density municipalities in Pennsylvania. PA Route 611 passes directly through the borough and Route 73 passes just along the border of Jenkintown both of which are major thoroughfares. In addition Jenkintown is served by the Jenkintown-Wyncote Train Station on the SEPTA Regional Rail Line, one of the busiest SEPTA regional rail station outside of Center City.
Fire response in Jenkintown is to a diverse district comprised of single and multiple family dwellings, twin and row homes, several mid-rise apartment/condominiums, multiple academic facilities including the Jenkintown School District, and a mixed commercial district. The Pioneer Fire Company also responds to mutual aid assignments primarily into Abington and Cheltenham Townships as well as several other surrounding municipalities.
The mission of the Pioneer Fire Company No.1 is to protect the lives and property of the residents of the Borough of Jenkintown. Our members train hundreds of hours per year in order to best serve the community both at in-house trainings each Thursday night as well as other scheduled trainings with mutual aid partners or at the Montgomery or Bucks County Public Safety Training Centers.
As of November 15, 2023 the Pioneer Fire Company participated in an operational consolidation with the Independent Fire Company to form the Jenkintown Fire Department. At this time, Pioneer and Independent Fire Companies became known as Montgomery County Station 99, with Pioneer being Station 99A and Independent Station 99B. This came after a multi-year process to streamline fire protection services and improve efficiency after adopting a unified standard operating guideline and joint training standard the year prior.
